GIVEAWAY (**CLOSED**): $500 Harris Coffee Gourmet Hamper plus a Coffee, Date & Hazelnut Pudding Recipe

UPDATE: WINNER ANNOUNCEMENT!
The winner is Cathy Patricia. Congratulations! Thank you to everyone for all of your wonderful entries, your time and effort is greatly appreciated.

I have an extra special treat for you today my lovely readers! Harris Coffee have been kind enough to offer up an incredible gourmet hamper to give away to one of you! This is a mammoth of a hamper, it's packed full of everything I crave on a regular basis: locally roasted coffee, wine & chocolate. There's also a range of sweet and savory delicacies included, something to please everyone. Entry details can be found at the bottom of this post.

Coffee holds a special place in my heart, I'm fairly certain I couldn't have survived the early months (or years) of parenthood without consuming my weight in coffee. It's been my go-to 'pick me up' for years, and a reward on more than one occasion.

When baking, coffee is often my staple for special occasion treats. My son's only 4 so my coffee desserts are often made in secrecy and consumed late at night while he sleeps. My husband's also a coffee fiend. Every birthday for the last 10 years he's always requested a cake involving coffee. So, when Harris Coffee asked me to whip up a recipe involving some of their locally roasted coffee I was more than happy to oblige!

This is one of those desserts best consumed on a frosty night, it's rich and warming and wonderful for sharing with friends after a leisurely winter dinner.

Coffee, Date & Hazelnut Self-Saucing Pudding

Recipe by A Rhubarb Rhapsody
Total time: 60 minutes
Yield: 6 servings

Ingredients for the pudding:
  • 1 1/4 cups self-raising flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground coffee (I used Harris Black Label)
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 2/3 cup milk
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2/3 cup firmly packed brown sugar
  • 40g melted butter
  • 1 cup pitted dried dates, finely chopped
  • 1/3 cup roasted hazelnuts, chopped roughly

Ingredients for the sauce:
  • 1 cup freshly brewed strong coffee (I used Harris Black Label)
  • 1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar
  • 25g butter, finely cubed

To make the pudding:
  1. Preheat oven to 180°C. Lightly grease an 8 cup-capacity oven-proof dish.
  2. Sift flour and cinnamon into a bowl. Add sugar and coffee and mix well. Add melted butter, vanilla extract and milk. Stir to combine. Fold in dates and hazelnuts. Spread mixture into prepared dish.
  3. Make sauce: dot the butter evenly over the pudding mixture, then sprinkle the brown sugar over the top. Pour coffee evenly over the back of a large metal spoon on to the pudding mixture. Bake for 40 minutes or until top is firm. Let stand for 5 minutes before serving.

  1. I regularly visit the farmers' markets on weekends as I choose to purchase local produce so that we can help and sustain our local growers and farmers! We all need to do our bit by supporting the locals as they are already being pushed out of the market by the supermarket chains as it is.

    1. Nice work Alan, I agree - we need to support local and handmade especially when we buy Christmas Hampers.

  5. With the Harris Coffee, I'd make... COFFEE!
Rich, strong and perfect for afternoon tea with the Gumnut Chocolates Classic Florentines.

I purchase local produce to support Australian jobs and enjoy boutique brands.

  6. That flavoursome pudding! I can easily imagine having that on a frosty night.

Awesome giveaway - this has pretty much every single thing I love, everyone's dream hamper I'm sure :D

With the Harris Coffee I'd make affogato, it's one of my favourite desserts; simple, classic yet full of flavour.

I support local produce to support my community, local farmers and small business and also to fight back against corporations so they don't take over completely!

  9. Self-saucing puddings are the best - especially in winter! Surely coffee in this would make this a perfectly acceptable breakfast food too?

  10. If i were to own this hamper i'd just make myself espresso in its purest form every morning to reach my work place at 6.30am... and I support local produce because I love australia :)

  11. With my Harris coffee I'd make myself wake up earlier so I could have more time to enjoy my morning coffee.

I buy from farmers markets because I know that what I'm buying is in season and hasn't been in cold storage for months.

  12. I'd make myself Coffee Shortbread and then a latte to dunk them in. Yum!

I love buying local, knowing that my choice means less pollution, fresher food, and money straight into the pockets of the people producing it.

  13. Wow what a hamper! If I won I would make your recipe as I think it sounds delicious! I'd use the espresso ground as that's my favourite coffee. The main reason I buy local produce is to support locals and because the food has travelled less and is fresher and better for the environment. Too many benefits to buying local to list :)

  14. I would make myself a nice rich full flavoured Harris flat white and enjoy it with Peanut Butter Coffee Brownies made using Harris coffee, damn hard job being retired but I work on it!

As for buying local, it makes sense buying local produce in season if you cant grow your own but I personally prescribe to the theory that we should try and grow a lot of our own food and know that it has not been poisoned with chemicals. Comes a time when you must purchase and then locally if not paying a big premium because it keeps people in jobs although as we all know the farmer gets shaken down and gets very little from the retailer compared to the risks each party takes. Farmers markets are terrific when you are dealing with the GENUINE PRODUCER but so often we are just buying from a disguised retail arm of a greengrocers shop, what a con that is!

  15. I would make a strong expresso to keep my eyelids open.
I love local produce because it's fresh and the money goes directly to the producers, not the Supermarkets!

  16. I'd make your Coffee, Date & Hazelnut Self-Saucing Pudding - I'm not sucking up, I really would as it sounds delicious! I shop locally because I believe in supporting local businesses and reducing our carbon footprint.

  17. I have a coffee pasta dough recipe i'm dying to make. I just can't decide if i should make ravoli filled with chocolate or just add a yummy creamy sauce.
    Opinions welcome

I love the feel of a local market. The atmosphere is relaxing, you can talk to the stall holders about their produce, sometimes sample different flavours before purchasing, it's fresh and my 3 little ones most of the times get a horsey ride (on a real horse)

  18. I could give a Harris coffee party and try all the delicious recipes you shared with us.
I love to support our great community by buying local produce to support our farmers as they are the life line of our nation. Buying locally means that you know what you eat/get; whether it has been treated with pesticides or even gene manipulated. You actually see what you get. Besides the money will stay in our community and not disappear abroad. You will get fresh product which are not cooled and stored for months and then shipped all over the planet. This will help your budget and also the environment immensely.

  20. Out comes an espresso shot, mixed together with milk just bought, an iced coffee to start the day, wouldn't have it any other way!

Local produce is a big thing for me, many stalls at the Farmer's Market I see, proudly keeping Aussies in the job, as well as the freshest and most nutritious veg in my gob!

  21. For me, the only thing to do with the coffee is to make that morning cup. The sound of it is a promise, the aroma is a gift, that beautifful steaming dark liquid to be paired harmoniously with light foamy hot milk and a teensy dash of vanilla - bliss!

Why local produce? simply because it tastes great and it's fresh. Why would you choose not to?

  22. i would make a coffee cake.
i like to buy local produce to support the local farmers and community rather than the big chains.

  23. Coffee panna cotta for me. I like to buy local because it's the right thing to do. You take care of your neighbour and he takes care of you. I wouldn't want to have to rely on some agribusiness 10,000 miles away because the local farmers went out of business.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I would invite all my friends around and make them a coffee they would always remember.

Local produce is the best because I know where its come from and the person that grew it. Helps the community and a household

  25. Would make Coffee Caramel Slice..my sister -in-law gave me the recipe and its hubbys favourite!
Local produce is appealing because you can talk to the growers at the markets and they can talk about their foody philosophy... And the produce just seems to have more flavour!

  26. 1. I'd make the coffee into a toothpaste to save time in the mornings (jump out of bed, brush teeth, ZING! Ready for work!)

    2. Because it's too far to go to buy foreign produce? (Just kidding!). I purchase a lot of my products from our local markets because it's a more enjoyable trip out with kids, the atmosphere is more vibrant and I care about our local community!

  27. I have become a great fan of the affogato - my two favourite things rolled into one beverage/dessert, so I'd whip up some of these for my monthly bookclub with 'the girls'.

As for purchasing 'local produce', I feel like I know where it comes from and who produces it, and the carbon footprint is just that little bit smaller!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Your pudding sounds devine so I'd have to test it out especially now thats it's a great season for hot puddings....I love purchasing from local produce as you know it's fresh and helping your community.

  29. I would make a modern twist on tiramisui. A family favourite. I love buying local produce mainly because I love supporting local producers, it makes me feel good knowing that their products are made close by and your hard earned money is going to people from close by.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I'd use the recipe to create Coffee, Date and Hazelnut Pudding. Yum! I prefer to support local industry which provides my family with fresh, quality, chemical free produce.

  31. I am most definitely going to make your 'Coffee, Date & Hazelnut Self-Saucing Pudding' I literally drool over date & self saucing puddings. I love supporting local growers, producers and business in general, because they all have families to support and I Love the freshness and natural taste

  32. I would make a carrot cake. Unfortunately, I have no knowledge of how to make carrot cakes, but I assume carrots feature heavily. I'd recruit my sister to help.

I buy local produce because it's better than shopping at a supermarket; it supports people in the community, markets add great flavour and excitement to the area and above all, the food tastes better.

  33. There is nothing better than a delicious dessert to soothe ones soul when stressed - after all desserts backwards is stressed! Right! I love a rich and creamy Tiramisu which my nan used to make, so this would be my choice.
Later, I would use the coffee grinds on my plants as they make a fabulous fertiliser and "heat up" the compost!
Just love the social aspect of buying local - Sunday mornings we take the family to a local organic market and it's a social and fun way to support our local community and also teach my kids healthy eating and how to make wise food choices. There is less packaging, energy is saved and the money spent goes to local people rather than large multinationals!
