I have an extra special treat for you today my lovely readers! Harris Coffee have been kind enough to offer up an incredible gourmet hamper to give away to one of you! This is a mammoth of a hamper, it's packed full of everything I crave on a regular basis: locally roasted coffee, wine & chocolate. There's also a range of sweet and savory delicacies included, something to please everyone. Entry details can be found at the bottom of this post.
Coffee holds a special place in my heart, I'm fairly certain I couldn't have survived the early months (or years) of parenthood without consuming my weight in coffee. It's been my go-to 'pick me up' for years, and a reward on more than one occasion.
When baking, coffee is often my staple for special occasion treats. My son's only 4 so my coffee desserts are often made in secrecy and consumed late at night while he sleeps. My husband's also a coffee fiend. Every birthday for the last 10 years he's always requested a cake involving coffee. So, when Harris Coffee asked me to whip up a recipe involving some of their locally roasted coffee I was more than happy to oblige!
This is one of those desserts best consumed on a frosty night, it's rich and warming and wonderful for sharing with friends after a leisurely winter dinner.
Coffee, Date & Hazelnut Self-Saucing Pudding
Recipe by A Rhubarb Rhapsody
Total time: 60 minutes
Yield: 6 servings
Ingredients for the pudding:
- 1 1/4 cups self-raising flour
- 1 teaspoon ground coffee (I used Harris Black Label)
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 2/3 cup milk
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- 2/3 cup firmly packed brown sugar
- 40g melted butter
- 1 cup pitted dried dates, finely chopped
- 1/3 cup roasted hazelnuts, chopped roughly
Ingredients for the sauce:
- 1 cup freshly brewed strong coffee (I used Harris Black Label)
- 1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar
- 25g butter, finely cubed
To make the pudding:
- Preheat oven to 180°C. Lightly grease an 8 cup-capacity oven-proof dish.
- Sift flour and cinnamon into a bowl. Add sugar and coffee and mix well. Add melted butter, vanilla extract and milk. Stir to combine. Fold in dates and hazelnuts. Spread mixture into prepared dish.
- Make sauce: dot the butter evenly over the pudding mixture, then sprinkle the brown sugar over the top. Pour coffee evenly over the back of a large metal spoon on to the pudding mixture. Bake for 40 minutes or until top is firm. Let stand for 5 minutes before serving.

I regularly visit the farmers' markets on weekends as I choose to purchase local produce so that we can help and sustain our local growers and farmers! We all need to do our bit by supporting the locals as they are already being pushed out of the market by the supermarket chains as it is.

With the Harris Coffee I'd make affogato, it's one of my favourite desserts; simple, classic yet full of flavour.
I support local produce to support my community, local farmers and small business and also to fight back against corporations so they don't take over completely!

Wow what a hamper! If I won I would make your recipe as I think it sounds delicious! I'd use the espresso ground as that's my favourite coffee. The main reason I buy local produce is to support locals and because the food has travelled less and is fresher and better for the environment. Too many benefits to buying local to list :)

ReplyDeleteAs for buying local, it makes sense buying local produce in season if you cant grow your own but I personally prescribe to the theory that we should try and grow a lot of our own food and know that it has not been poisoned with chemicals. Comes a time when you must purchase and then locally if not paying a big premium because it keeps people in jobs although as we all know the farmer gets shaken down and gets very little from the retailer compared to the risks each party takes. Farmers markets are terrific when you are dealing with the GENUINE PRODUCER but so often we are just buying from a disguised retail arm of a greengrocers shop, what a con that is!
I would make a strong expresso to keep my eyelids open.

I love the feel of a local market. The atmosphere is relaxing, you can talk to the stall holders about their produce, sometimes sample different flavours before purchasing, it's fresh and my 3 little ones most of the times get a horsey ride (on a real horse)
I could give a Harris coffee party and try all the delicious recipes you shared with us.
ReplyDeleteI love to support our great community by buying local produce to support our farmers as they are the life line of our nation. Buying locally means that you know what you eat/get; whether it has been treated with pesticides or even gene manipulated. You actually see what you get. Besides the money will stay in our community and not disappear abroad. You will get fresh product which are not cooled and stored for months and then shipped all over the planet. This will help your budget and also the environment immensely.

For me, the only thing to do with the coffee is to make that morning cup. The sound of it is a promise, the aroma is a gift, that beautifful steaming dark liquid to be paired harmoniously with light foamy hot milk and a teensy dash of vanilla - bliss!

Coffee panna cotta for me. I like to buy local because it's the right thing to do. You take care of your neighbour and he takes care of you. I wouldn't want to have to rely on some agribusiness 10,000 miles away because the local farmers went out of business.

ReplyDeleteI buy local produce because it's better than shopping at a supermarket; it supports people in the community, markets add great flavour and excitement to the area and above all, the food tastes better.
There is nothing better than a delicious dessert to soothe ones soul when stressed - after all desserts backwards is stressed! Right! I love a rich and creamy Tiramisu which my nan used to make, so this would be my choice.

Just love the social aspect of buying local - Sunday mornings we take the family to a local organic market and it's a social and fun way to support our local community and also teach my kids healthy eating and how to make wise food choices. There is less packaging, energy is saved and the money spent goes to local people rather than large multinationals!
